DRAGON BISCUIT SECOND WIN ON HOME TRACK

Previous course winner Dragon Biscuit (5 g Choisir – Dawning Light, by Siyouni) was back in business when winning the $25,000 Prima Park Rating 65 1050 metres on 10 December at Matamata.

A two-year-old winner on the course, after finishing third in the Waikato Stud Slipper (Gr. 3, 1200m) to subsequent Sistema Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) winner Sword of State (Snitzel), Dragon Biscuit was a sprint winner last February at Taupo, and recaptured his best with a strong performance.

Ridden to instructions by Billy Jacobson, Dragon Biscuit was restrained to track the speed in third, presented on straightening, and after quickening to lead a furlong out he kept fighting to hold at bay debut winner and race favourite Tightly Laced (American Pharoah) and stakes winner Hanalei (Darci Brahma).

“He probably does too much up front, so a good idea to ride him with cover today and Pam (Gerard) had kept the speed in his legs,” Jacobson said.

“He took awhile to switch off, but relaxed when he did and was keen again to hit the lead in the straight.”

On footing upgraded to Good4, Dragon Biscuit ran 1050 metres in 1:01.8, last 600m in 34.3, and paid $19.80 & $3.00 on the NZ TAB tote.

“We thought there would be good pace over a short trip and an ideal time to ride him with cover to see if he could finish off,” Gerard said. “He was fit, ready to go, and looked fantastic.

“He just needed to be ridden back a bit and coming back to 1000 metres just allowed him to sit in behind them.

“He hasn’t had the best of feet, but we’re on top of them at the moment and he got a good track today which helped.”

Owned by Pegasus Bloodstock, Taniwha Club, and Ballymore Stables, Dragon Biscuit sports the colours of Alan Fu (Pegasus Bloodstock).

Winner of the Lightning Stakes (Gr. 1, 1000m) at Flemington, sire Choisir (Danehill Dancer) beat the best sprinters in the world when winning the King’s Stand Stakes (Gr. 2, 1000m) and Golden Jubilee Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) at Royal Ascot in the U.K., before becoming highly successful at stud.

Dragon Biscuit was strapped by Rathore Singh.
