Abitofado heads to Tasmania

Tough galloper Abitofado is our feature event runner for the weekend, due to take his place in Sunday's $300,000 Hobart Cup.

Whilst not ideally drawn in ten, the six-year-old looks nicely placed over 2200m, his form apart from a last start blemish reading well.

"He comes off a disappointing run at Sandown," Michael Moroney conceded, "but he was a bit slowly away from an inside gate and he ended up in the worst part of the track."

"His preparation leading up to that run had been good so we decided to press ahead."

In-form jockey Chris Symons rides Abitofado for the first time.

He also rides for the stable at Moonee Valley on Friday night, taking the ride on Brillianconi who looks nicely placed in the Sportingbet Handicap.

Winning two in a row before a solid on-pace fourth at Flemington last start, the up-and-coming four-year-old steps up to 2040m for the first time this preparation.

"He has drawn a bit awkwardly (9 of 11)," said Moroney, "but it looks the right sort of race for him and the form around him is strong - he should prove hard to beat."

The third of our weekend's runners is Scarlett Pulse who debuts in the 1100m maiden at Seymour on Sunday - Mark Zahra to ride.

An exceptionally well related son of Volksraad, the grandson of the legendary broodmare Eight Carat has been showing ability - a short race selected for him as he has shown a tendency to pull a bit in his work.

"He tends to want to really get on with the job," Moroney said, "so a fast run race should help him to settle."

"He is a nice horse," he added, "we have always had a bit of time for him - but he has taken a bit of time. He will be running on well."

In other stable news, King Pulse has been working well in preparation for a first up tilt at the Lightning Stakes. Second in a recent jump-out, he lines up in another one at Flemington on Friday morning - "he has been coming through his work well and the reports from his rider have been good."

Brazilian Pulse also jumps out on Friday with the Kewney Stakes the likely kick off point for Australia's star three-year-old filly.
