Two Derby runners

Racing eyes will all be on Royal Randwick on Saturday and Ballymore looks forward to a big day with four runners including Sabrage in the feature event, the Group One AJC Derby.

And he is just one of our two Derby runners this weekend - Flashy Fella (pictured)taking his place in the Western Australian Classic.

We also saddle up another three runners at Randwick as well as one at Morphettville and three at Flemington - a busy day!

Nicely primed to show his best at his fifth run back from a spell, Sabrage is big odds in the AJC Derby but if he can live up to his best form and his track work he can be a player.

A game and somewhat unlucky third in the Victorian Derby, Sabrage has the outside gate (13) to contend with but we are hoping he can work forward and get cover.

"He is fit and ready for the race," Michael Moroney said - his main concern being Sabrage's Rosehill Guineas failure where he was not happy the Sydney way of going.

"That tripped us up a bit," Moroney said - "he has always worked well the clockwise way so it was a surprise. Hopefully he will have learned from the run."

The first of our Randwick runners, Devonshire Duke, lines up in the second race - the Gr.3 Carbine Club Stakes.

Having only his fifth start, the promising son of Keeper has also drawn the widest gate (11) but he has always shown ability and his last start run at big odds at Albury was an eye-catcher.

"We are looking to take him to Brisbane," said Moroney, "so it will be interesting to get a line on where he is at."

First up since the spring, classy mare Born To Rock takes on some smart ones in the Gr.2 Sapphire Stakes.

"It is a pretty strong field," Moroney conceded, "but she is at her best going right handed and she races well fresh."

Kicking off her last campaign with an easy Moonee Valley victory, the Gr.1 placed mare has drawn nicely in barrier 2 with Corey Brown to ride.

The Sydney Cup bound Muirfield is the fourth of our Randwick runners, the four-year-old looking to atone for an unlucky Albury Cup run in the Gr.2 Chairman's Quality.

Another of our Sydney runners to have drawn awkwardly (barrier 14), Muirfield is being tried over a trip for the first time but being a son of Don Eduardo a bit of distance should suit.

"His form reads well," Moroney said, "and he is going well."

Up-and-coming mare Jelly Baby is the first of our Flemington runners, the in-form four-year-old looking for a hat-trick of wins in the Lort Smith Handicap.

Successful at her last two Bendigo outings - overcoming trouble in running at her latest, the daughter of Istidaad drops back in distance but she is hard fit.

"She has trained on well," Moroney said, "and the big roomy track will suit her. There is no reason why she can't win again."

Topweight in the final event at Flemington - the RDA Handicap, Shenzhou Steeds is haivng his first run since the spring.

"He is forward enough first up," said Moroney, "but I don't know if barrier one will suit - he is a horse who has always performed best with a bit of room."

Lining up in the same race is Zabisco who looks ready to strike form at his third run this time in.

"The 1400m should be ideal and hopefully there will be a bit of pace on. If there is he should prove hard to beat."

Over to Adelaide where talented filly Crimson Lady attempts to earn some valuable black type in the Gr.3 Auraria Stakes.

Unfortunately the daughter of Volksraad has drawn a very tricky gate (17) for Jason Lyon but she has earned a crack in tougher grade after impressing with a soft recent victory at Ballarat.
