WHAT A DIFFERENCE A NOSE MAKES

The most important thing in horseracing could be the nose, especially when a horse gets it in front as Dragon Queen (3 f Sweynesse – Happy Endings, by Tavistock) did to win the Maiden 1400 metres on 16 December at Pukekohe.

After doing well to finish second off a wide run over 1400 metres on 25 November at Te Rapa, Dragon Queen again had to contend with a wide draw (12), but went forward to lead and had enough in the tank to get her bib down on the line.

For the filly with illustrious owners: Sir Owen Glenn (Go Bloodstock) and Alan Fu (New Zealand Chinese Jockey Club), Dragon Queen boasted juvenile form worthy of a Matamata Breeders’ (Gr. 2, 1200m) in February, and more recently a start in the Soliloquy Stakes (Gr. 3, 1400m).

“She has been consistently good and to finally get a win is richly deserved,” said co-trainer Pam Gerard.

“We’ve lined her up in some good races and she’d performed well and she’s only just starting to put on weight and improve while still racing. She put on 15-kilos quite quickly and up 10-kilos on her last run, so going in the right direction.

“We think she can step up to a mile and there are some nice races around over Christmas and into New Year.”

Selected by Paul Moroney, she was bred by Dowager Duchess of Bedford & Estate late Duke of Bedford, and purchased for $50,000 as a yearling at the 2019 Karaka Book 3 Sale, from the draft of Brighthill Farm.

Her grand-dam was Champion 3YO and Filly of Year Snap (Kingdom Bay), raced by Lord (Robin) and Lady (Henrietta) Tavistock.

On footing rated Dead4, but racing slower near the rail, Dragon Queen ran the 1400 metres in 1:25.2, and returned $3.60 & $1.60 as second favourite on the NZ TAB tote.

“I’d prefer her on firmer ground and we should get that in the months ahead,” Gerard said.

“The owners are having a good trot at the moment and we’ve got some nice horses for them. Sir Owen has a lot of good horses and Alan Fu won the New Zealand Cup recently with Dragon Storm, and they both have horses that will be competitive in the next few months.”

Dragon Queen was strapped by Sam Singh.
