SOUND FINALLY GETS SOME LUCK AT SANDOWN

Trainer Mike Moroney was a contented man watching Sound win Saturday’s Group 2 Zipping Classic at Sandown.

His imported stayer had finally found the line first after narrowly missing out on a Melbourne Cup spot when a close second in the Hotham Handicap at his last start.

"He certainly did deserve that," Moroney said after Sound accelerated clear 400m out under Jamie Kah and then stayed on best of all to defeat Brimham Rocks by 1-1/4 lengths.

"It is probably just the last 18 months that he’s started to look well. He came over from Germany and we had a season before we ran him in the Melbourne Cup and it looked that way, too,” Moroney said.

"It took him a while to really condition up but he has now but he has now and he’s got really strong, nice and bright and he’s turned it all around - it has been a terrific effort from the horse and the staff.”

“He got a great ride, it really was. Levendi took her (Kah) into the race which was lovely because he carted us for long enough to give our horse a chance today which is great.

Moroney said he was delighted to win for long-time owner Gerard Peterson, in whose familiar purple and white colours Sound races in.

"He’s been with me since I started training - Second Coming was one of the first ones he raced with us and has been with us ever since.

“I’m sure Sound has got some nice races in him in the autumn but he can go to the spelling paddock now and have a nice break while we work out a plan for him.”
