SIX CHANCES AT HOME ON ANZAC DAY

A busy Anzac day for us at home with six runners at Flemington.

Nerve Not Verve is our first runner in race two, the benchmark 84 handicap for fillies and mares over 1600m.

It is the second start this preparation for the daughter of Shocking which Mike Moroney says has improved for her first-up third over 1600m at Sandown on the Lakeside course.

“The draw is not ideal but there is speed on her outside so I’m hoping she can get a trail across,” Moroney said.

“She’s up in class but I’m happy with her, she’s trained on well and I’m sure she will run well and not be far away.”

Last start Caulfield winner Mirimar goes next in race four, the Open handicap over 2600m with Michael Poy’s claim reducing the weight to 54.5kg.

“He’s trained on well and I’m really happy with him,” Moroney said.

“He’s not suited by the weights compared to the Melbourne Cup winner however, it’s a horse race and we know our horse will try hard, once he strikes form he usually keeps it.

“He’ll probably put himself on speed and then go from there.”

Milwaukee (pictured) is back on the straight course in race seven, the open sprint over 1000m with Michael Poy reducing the weight to 56kg

“He’ll jump from barrier four after scratchings and he loves the straight,” Moroney said.

“It’s a solid field but his work on Tuesday was excellent, he gets in nearly on the minimum and I’m expecting him to run well at good odds.”

We have three runners in race eight, the open handicap over 1700m, with Hang Man, Chapada and Gundown all starting.

Hang Man finished seventh first-up over 1400m at Caulfield and will jump from barrier one today with Michael Dee in the saddle.

“He’s worked up well and has a decent second-up record,” Moroney said.

“My main worry is drawing the inside - it’s a short run to the first turn and he could end up cluttered up along the inside.

“If he gets some luck and has a clear run I’m sure he will run well as he looks terrific, the best we’ve had him.”

Chapada has made the field after scratchings but has to jump one from the outside with James Winks riding.

“He’s made the field which is good it’s just a pity about the horrible draw,” Moroney said.

“He’ll need luck from where he is and his first-up run was better than it looks on paper. His work on Tuesday was very pleasing and if he can get some luck in the run I will not be surprised to see him figuring in the finish.

Gundown resumed an excellent finish in the same Victoria Handicap (Gr 3) as Hang Man and Chapada and has pleased since.

“He’s going well and I’m happy with him,” Moroney said.

“He looks terrific but from the wide draw he will have to go back. Whatever he does today he will improve on and if they do go out and run along fast then he should be finishing off strongly.”
