GUNDOWN POWERS HOME TO WIN THE MOE CUP

Not even a power outage at the track could prevent Gundown powering home to land Thursday's $150,000 Moe Cup.

Revelling in the soft conditions, Gundown came from near last around the home turn to overwhelm his rivals inside the final 100m and win going away by one length.

It is the second country cup for the stable this season following the success of Hang Man, also ridden by James Winks, at Benalla last month.

The win had a bittersweet post-race script with James Winks apologising for gaining the winning ride at the expense of Dwayne Dunn, whose father sadly passed away earlier in the week.

"Condolences to Dwayne Dunn,"Winks said. "You don't like to pick up rides under conditions like this, I wish I wasn't in this position, but it is what it is and condolences to the family."

Mike Moroney had suggested in his pre-race preview he was expecting a big performance from Gundown and was delighted to add another trophy to the cabinet.

“That was satisfying for sure,” Moroney said. “The soft conditions really suited him, the horse was fit and ready to go after two runs and James rode him beautifully.

“He’s a horse that has won at 3200 metres so we planned to try and keep some freshness in his legs for this race so it’s worked out really well.

“We’ll just see how he comes out of this before we make a plan - condolences to Dwayne Dunn who was booked to ride but we’ll make it up to him.”
