Pam Gerard - Resident Trainer

Pam was brought up on a sheep and beef farm in the Rakia Gorge at the base of Mt Hutt, Methven and was schooled locally until high school when she boarded for 5 years at St Margrets College Christchurch.

Very heavily involved in sport, athletics, skiing and in particular hockey, representing New Zealand at U21 level. After leaving school Pam worked for Cindy Hampton on a pre-training farm in Methven before working full time for Peter and Dawn Williams in Ashburton for a period of 4 years.

Pam then traveled to Japan for 12 months breaking in horses which allowed her to save enough money to return home to Methven and buy her own 20 acre property and setting up a breaking and pre-training operation. In time, and as owners saw the benefits of having horses trained in a different environment, the operation grew to the size where a trainers licence was needed. The business continued to grow and following requests from several owners, Pam then upgraded her license to a public trainers with the best preformed horse being Narousa who ran fourth in a Wellington Cup (G1) then won the Kumara Nuggets on his way to completing the Waikato and Great Northern Hurdles double in 2003.

Eventually the business outgrew Methven and was sold up to invest in another 30 acre property in Ashburton, with 14 boxes, and leased a 20 box barn at the Asburton racecourse where she continued to train until joining Te Akau as assistant trainer in October 2011.

In Pam's own right, she trained 91 winners 108 seconds and 147 thirds before joining Te Akau where her role involved travelling horses locally as well as overseas, including taking Rock'n'Pop to Sydney, a winter carnival in Brisbane with Costa Viva, and three trips to the New Zealand Cup Carnival with great success.

This season she was repositioned to manage Te Akau’s South Island team and staff, from where she proved to be influential component following the Classic double success of last November with Risque and Xtravagant in the New Zealand 1000 and 2000 Guineas at Riccarton. Her overall input during that period saw 17 wins and 10 placings from 36 starters, including the two Group Ones referred to and another five stakes events.

Pam brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and horsemanship to the stable and we are very excited to have secured her in 2016.
