Zabisco Zooms!

Zabisco may have disappointed when finishing well back in the Lord Stakes, but the talented five-year-old was back to his best with an impressive performance at Flemington on Saturday.

Always travelling well for an in-form Glen Boss who kicked home four winners on the card - Zabisco let go of a powerful finishing burst over the final stages of the Comedy King Handicap - storming down the outside.

Boss, who was having his first run on the son of Zabeel, had done his home work on the horse and was always confident during the run.

"I had a really good look at this horse's past and with him it just a matter of how he settles - if he pulls he runs last, if he doesn't he wins."

Letting Zabisco get into a good, steady rhythm early, Boss made sure that the horse had plenty of space for his finishing run.

"From the 600m I just let him come out and get the room he wanted," he said, "and basically he felt like the winner from the top of the straight."

Michael Moroney was pleased to see Zabisco race so tractibally - "he is starting to relax more," he said - "he improving all the time."

Moroney is hoping to secure black type for the well bred entire with the aim of an eventual stud career for him.

A six times winner from his 19 starts to date, Zabisco is raced by Tony McGrath, John Voitin, Troy Mobbs, Ronald Vela, Larry Greene, Ian Frykberg, Ian Wales, Andrew Dale, the Purvis Loughnan Syndicate (manager Daryl Purvis), Ken Wikeley and Jonathon Collins (purchased as a tried horse in NZ by the latter) .

Daryl Purvis (also part-owner of the smart gallopers Major Coup and Muirfield) was on hand for celebrations on Saturday, the relative newcomer to the world of racehorse ownership admitting to getting very excited when his horses salute.

"When Zabisco won at Caulfield (last April) I nearly ripped Matt's (Hoysted) head off! I had tear running down my face... it could've been a Melbourne Cup as far as I am concerned - it is a great feeling!"

Purvis missed Zabisco's Wodonga Cup victory in early December, that day taking part in a charity fundraiser at a pub. Fortunately the pub had Sky Channel and he was able to cheer from afar.

"Most of the people got on him so there was a lot of back-slapping that day!"

Zabisco's win was an apt one for the stable - the race named after Comedy King, the 50th winner of the Melbourne Cup whilst Mike & Paul's grandmother bred Hi Jinx - longshot winner of the 100th Melbourne Cup.
