What shall we do with a Drunken Sailor? Win!

Great to see champion hoop Damien Oliver into winning form so quickly after a frightening fall at Moonee Valley on Friday night - and better still it was on one of our's, the tough import Drunken Sailor.

Having only his third run for Ballymore, the well travelled seven-year-old - a winner in England, Ireland and Dubai - broke through for his first success on Australian soil.

Looking to be under pressure early in the straight, Drunken Sailor was patiently handled by Oliver who gave him a little breather before switching him back to the rails.

"He started to travel better then," Oliver said, adding that "he felt the weight (60kg) at the end but he did enough to hold them off."

"It was," he added, "worth getting out of hospital for!"

Not a bad effort, in hospital at 1am and winning a Listed race 12 hours later!

Heading towards the Adelaide Cup, Drunken Sailor has pleased Michael Moroney with his progress.

"He still needs to learn to relax a bit but it was a nice win."

"When Damien went for him he did quicken up nicely which is hard to do under that sort of weight and he did get to the lead a fair way out."

Moroney was pleasantly surprised upon waking up on Saturday morning to find that Oliver was still riding - "my first thought was that I hoped he'd be right for Glass Harmonium next week," he said.

"But it just goes to show how fit and tough he is."

Raced by T Bloom, J Higgins, Gerard Peterson, G Ryan, the Glenlogan Park Syndicate, Uthmeyer Racing & OTI Racing (managers raced Terry Henderson & Simon O'Donnell), Drunken Sailor is by the Gr.1 placed Spinning World stallion Tendulkar.

A descendant of the famed matriarch Selene, he hails from the same branch of this prolific family as the great stallion Sir Tristram and more recently the Mackinnon Stakes winner Lad Of The Manor.

Thanks to Daryl Sherer for the photo of Drunken Sailor at a soggy Flemington!
