THREE SUNDAY RUNNERS AT GEELONG

Spanish Peaks, King Landon and Meteor Light head to Geelong for the stable on Sunday.

Spanish Peaks (pictured) is the first to go in race one, the 3YO Maiden Plate over 1218m with Damien Oliver to ride from barrier two.

The son of Zacinto ran well at his only start when finishing sixth over 1240m on a heavy track at Geelong in June and Mike Moroney has a good opinion of Spanish Peaks.

“It looks a pretty even sort of race with similar types but he’s drawn nicely and Damien has chosen to stick with him,” Moroney said.

“I do like this horse and he’s got good ability but he’s still a work in progress.

“With that in mind I’d like to ride him quietly and teach him to relax and use his talent the right way.

“That said it will not surprise me at all to see him run a big race as I said, he does have good ability.”

King Landon runs in race four, the Maiden Plate over 1720m with Jordan Childs riding from barrier eight in the capacity field.

Having finished runner-up at his last two starts, Moroney is keen for King Landon to break through.

“He’s racing well and deserves a win,” Moroney said. “He’s holding his condition well and training well.

“I’m happy with him and provided he gets ordinary luck in raining I do think we will be hard to beat.”

Meteor Light runs in race five, the Benchmark 78 Handicap over 2424m with Michael Poy riding and drawn barrier one.

Poy steered Meteor Light to win in Benchmark 64 class at Sandown over 2400m last time out and Moroney has stuck with the apprentice in a tougher race.

“We accepted when the track was rated soft (5) which would have suited but it’s improving to good and we’re running out of options with him as he needs some give in the ground,” Moroney said.

“We’ve kept Michael on even though it’s not a claiming race as he knows the horse and we’re really happy with the horse.

“It’s a stronger race and provided he can cope with the ground than I’m sure he will be competitive.”
