Last start winners take on Tauranga

Makarios (pictured) and Sororia are both looking to make it back to back victories as they line up in their respective events at Tauranga this Saturday.

Winning his only start as a two-year-old back in June, Makarios (Makfi) was scheduled to run at Te Rapa last month until heavy weather conditions prevented the meeting from taking place, hence the option to take on older horses at Tauranga.

“This is plan B for him, and it has been a long time between runs, but he’s a horse who enjoys his work and we haven’t done too much with him in between times. He’s naturally a fit horse,” co-trainer Chad Ormsby said.

“If he can put his hand up on Saturday, and comes through well, we will look at heading towards the Wanganui Guineas next month.”

Makarios will partner Craig Grylls, who was aboard the son of Makfi at his debut outing at Matamata, and runs in the Rating 65 event over 1200m.

The second runner of the card will be fellow last start winner Sororia (Iffraaj) who built up to a tidy win over the course and distance last month, and looks another strong competitor as she steps up in class and grade.

“She needs rain on the day, and if she can get that, I would like to think she can be competitive in this field. She’s shown us enough to warrant heading to Saturday class and with the right run and conditions she can prove us right.”

Sororia will be ridden by Michael Coleman and runs in the Rating 65 event over 1600m.
